A Virginia Church Adds A New Sanctuary For Its Growing Ministry
Overview of this Project:
- Wirtz, VA
- Pastor Gary Hoffman
- 27,000 SF
In 1999, the Faith Fellowship in Wirtz, VA no longer had enough space for its growing congregation. The church purchased a new, larger property and erected a “Sprung Instant Structure” to house their sanctuary, classrooms, and offices. These cost-effective buildings are quick to build and allow design flexibility. Ten years later, they added a family center. However, by 2016, the congregation had already outgrown the additional space, so the church community began a fundraising effort for an expansion. They chose Churches by Daniels to handle the design and construction.
Our Design-Build Process Creates a Flawless Church Expansion
The Faith Fellowship congregation and Pastor Gary Hoffman decided they’d need a 27,000-square-foot sanctuary to accommodate their growing community and blend flawlessly with their existing structure. At Churches by Daniels, we use a design-build process (also known as single responsibility or design-construct) which means that we manage the architecture, engineering, and construction under a single contract. For the Faith Fellowship team and all of our church clients, this approach provides smoother, better accountability, a more organized team effort, and streamlined communication. During the design phase, we used our careful planning process to ensure we could successfully integrate the addition with the old space.
Pandemic Delays and Preserving an Eagle’s Habitat
During the project, we encountered a variety of challenges. First, we needed to build the new portion of the structure over an existing detention pond on the property, which necessitated additional site preparation. To stay within the Faith Fellowship’s budget, we moved fill dirt from the back of the property.
Another important task at hand — we needed to protect an eagle who made a home on the property. We worked around the green space stamp requirements to ensure there was enough forestry remaining to protect its natural habitat. Lastly, the COVID-19 pandemic caused numerous delays.
A Gorgeous New Church Sanctuary Within Budget
Despite supply chain issues and other pandemic-related delays, the entire project came in under budget by the time the Churches by Daniels team completed it in 2021.
Pastor Gary was thrilled with the results, as was the rest of the congregation.
“Charlie knows the word of God and Charlie knows churches, pastors, and congregations,” he said. “I couldn’t recommend them more highly.”
